Light and colour at night
A 600-lumen spotlight switches on with motion and lights the scene for colour night vision, adjustable in brightness and colour temperature. Plain infrared night vision is also available.
Solar built in
A solar panel sits in the top of the body and tops up the 13,400 mAh built-in battery. eufy recommends at least two hours of direct sun a day.
Talk and alert
Half-duplex two-way audio lets you take turns speaking. Human detection can filter motion alerts, and a 90 dB siren can be triggered manually or automatically.
The honest details
Before you buy.
- Night footage is colour only when the spotlight is on. Colour night vision needs the spotlight switched on. Without it, night footage is plain infrared, black and white.
- The view is fixed. 135° wide, no pan, no tilt. Aim it once when you mount it.
- It records events, not all day. Motion and human detection trigger clips to the 8 GB on board. No continuous recording, no cloud plan, no NAS export.
- Check the optional hub route. Current tables include Mini, HomeBase 3 and S1, while the dedicated S40 FAQ still excludes HomeBase. Confirm the exact pairing before purchase.
- Fair means visible marks. Scuffs and scratches on the housing that you will notice standing in front of it. If that would bother you daily, choose a higher renewed grade.
- It alerts. It does not prevent. A camera records, detects and notifies. It is one part of home security, not the whole of it.

- HomeBase Mini, HomeBase 3 and HomeBase Professional S1. Current eufy compatibility sources list T8124 with these hubs, while the dedicated S40 FAQ says no HomeBase connection. Confirm the exact hub, app and firmware pairing before relying on it.
- An external solar panel. The S40 FAQ says a eufy solar panel is compatible, but an older Solar Panel Charger guide excludes S40. Confirm the exact panel revision and connection.

What you need
A sunny position and a charged battery
The S230, also called S40, has a built-in solar panel and connects to 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi. A HomeBase is optional. Give it direct sun and charge before mounting; solar performance depends on placement and activity. Check exact accessory compatibility before adding an external panel because official guidance differs by revision.
Recording and storage
Local events, not an all-day timeline
The S230 has 8 GB built in for event clips and overwrites the oldest recordings when full. It does not support continuous recording, cloud recording or NAS in the exact S40 FAQ. Current hub compatibility has expanded beyond that older FAQ; check the chosen hub and firmware before adding one.
- Charge it fully first. Use the USB-C cable before it goes anywhere near a ladder.
- Pair it next to the router. Open the eufy Security app on a 2.4 GHz network and scan the camera's QR code. Then walk it to the mounting spot and check the signal holds before you drill.
- Mount for sun and view together. eufy recommends hanging it 2 to 3 m above the ground, with at least two hours of direct sun a day and a clear 135° view of what matters.
- Set zones and the spotlight. Up to two activity zones, plus adjustable spotlight brightness and colour temperature. Point them at the gate or the driveway, not the street.

Is a Fair-grade unit worse at its job than a new one?
No. The grade describes the housing, not the electronics. A renewed unit runs the same published spec sheet. The difference is cosmetic marks and the plain packaging it ships in.
Do I need a HomeBase or a subscription to use it?
No. Standalone use records events to the camera’s 8 GB over 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi without a paid core recording plan. Current eufy tables list Mini, HomeBase 3 and S1, but the S40 FAQ conflicts. Check the exact hub and firmware if that optional route matters.
How much sun does it actually need?
eufy's figure is at least two hours of direct sunlight a day to keep the built-in 13,400 mAh battery topped up under normal use. A shaded spot will still work, but you will be charging it by USB-C more often.
What does night footage look like?
Colour, when the spotlight is set to switch on with motion at night, rated by eufy up to about 8 m away. Without the spotlight it is plain infrared, black and white. The view is fixed: no pan, no tilt.
